Alex Scott and Staff West Gippsland Football Netball Competition open interleague coach Kate Steel has named her side for this weekend’s Worksafe Community Championships match.
Steel will be without Korumburra-Bena star Kim Hillberg, who is unavailable due to injury, but has still pulled together a squad brimming with established and budding talent for the clash with Maryborough Castlemaine and District Football Netball League.
“We’ve had a few injuries with one or two players who we asked to play and were really keen that got injured but I’m very happy with the group we’ve got,” Steel said.
“My regular Saturday team is probably a bit taller than this team but we’ll be pretty quick through the defence and mid court.”
In the absence of Hillberg, rising star Shae Kyle – fresh from representing Victoria at the National Netball Championships in Adelaide last month – will have a key role to play as the team’s only genuine tall defender.
Steel was expecting Maryborough Castlemaine and District to provide a tough contest but was looking forward to a good hit out ahead of the upcoming Association Championships.
“I know the area well and they always have very strong players around Bendigo and Castlemaine but a few of us have played together over the years so we know each other’s games pretty well and we’re going to go out there and have a red hot crack and have fun.”
The competition’s 17-and-under side has also been named, with six clubs represented in coach Jenny McRae’s squad.
Matches take place at Garfield Recreation Reserve on Saturday, with the 17&U game kicking off at 12.30pm, followed by the open clash at 1.45pm.
The 17&U side is back in action on Sunday when they contest the Eastern Region Zone Qualifying Stage of the Association Championships at Sale.
