NETBALL COMPETITION

The Alex Scott & Staff West Gippsland Football Netball Competition enjoyed a red letter day at this week’s Evans Petroleum Cup junior interleague football carnival at Yinnar.

The under-16 team knocked off the mighty TRFM Gippsland League to win the carnival for the first time, while the under-18 came within percentage of doing the same.

Between them, the two sides won six of their seven games on the day.

The 16s opened proceedings with an impressive win against Ellinbank and District, 4.11 (35) to 0.4 (4).

The only down side was the team’s inaccuracy in front of goal, but the performances of the likes of Mitchell Moschetti, Josh Ryan and Heath Morgan-Morris ensured we weren’t made to pay.

Next up was Mid Gippsland, with three goals in either half enough to secure a comfortable win, 6.7 (43) to 2.3 (15).

Skipper Morgan-Morris once again led from the front, while Matt Voss and Nick Prowd were also prominent.

The biggest win of the day came against the combined team from the Rent 4 Keeps East Gippsland and Omeo District football netball leagues.

Nick Prowd was unstoppable inside forward-50, finishing with three goals in the 10.7 (67) to 0.2 (2) victory.

Jett Pickering and Keith Robinson (two goals) were the other standouts.

Those results meant a showdown with fellow undefeated side Gippsland would decide the champion of the carnival.

Goals to Prowd and Josh Ryan gave the boys a five-point lead at half-time and when Harry O’Brien kicked the opening goal of the second half the lead was out to 11 points.

The Gippsland side never stopped fighting and got back within four points, but Jack Wilson’s late goal gave the boys from the West some breathing room and they hung on to win 4.1 (25) to 2.4 (16).

Matt Voss, Jack Wilson and Mitchell Moschetti were named in the best.

Nick Prowd received the medal as our player of the carnival, while Mitch Nicholas was named the overall Player of the Carnival, as voted by the umpires.

The under-18 side began the day with a 4.5 (29) to 2.5 (17) win against Ellinbank and District, with Brayden Weller, Cooper Hampton and Zac Soutar leading the way.

Things did not quite go to plan against the AGL Loy Yang North Gippsland FNL.

Locked at 3.2 (20) apiece at half-time, the boys fell short in a second half shootout, eventually going down 8.3 (51) to 5.6 (36), with North Gippsland forward Cain Iorangi proving a tough matchup with five goals.

Cooper Hampton starred with three goals in a brilliant individual performance, while Luke Hartley and Joel Motta also played strong games.

The loss meant only a big win against the undefeated Gippsland side in the final game would be enough to win the carnival.

The plan was well and truly on track at half-time, with goals to Trent McMahon, Luke Hartley and Cooper Hampton giving the boys from the West a 14-point lead and when Jay Verhagen kicked the opening goal of the second half, they momentarily moved ahead of Gippsland on percentage.

However, late goals to Gippsland through Nic Bulmer and Burkeley Macfarlane cut the final margin to just five points and Gippsland retained the cup, despite West Gippsland winning the head to head battle 4.9 (33) to 4.4 (28).

Hampton, McMahon and Tom Glassborow were the standouts, with the former awarded with the medal as West Gippsland’s player of the day.

Mitch Cammarano scooped the overall Player of the Carnival medal, as voted by the umpires.

Well done to all involved in this year’s representative program, including coaches Brendan Hickman and Shaun Sparks, and to our interleague partner The Drain Man, for its ongoing support.
